Storm Ladies vs. University of Hull ladies:

With a new coach, Justin Robinson and some new members Storm Ladies faced a younger more experienced Hull team. Using a man-to-man defence for the first time Storm Ladies performed well, a combination of experienced players helping the newer players and a healthy spread of points across the team storm managed to maintain a steady flow of points on the board while holding their opponents to far fewer baskets. The outcome was a comfortable victory over Hull with a sizable buffer of points between the two teams.

Storm Ladies vs. Lincoln University ladies:

After finally finding the venue storm ladies prepared to dismantle another younger more experienced university side. With far less substitutes than their opponents, storm started well after only a very brief warm up and preparation period. Storm got some solid first points on the board through their Canadian international Natalie Dumoulin. The first 2 quarters remained competitive throughout with both teams trading baskets, Storm where being troubled by Lincolns two athletic guards’ but continued to rack up baskets through inside shots from Sarah Hallgarth and Nathalie Halber and layups from Lina Buziliauskaite. After the half Storm came out the stronger side quickly earning themselves a small lead thanks to a re-energised Justine Ramsden who provided countless numbers of offensive rebounds, Natalie Dumoulin added yet more stats to her name with several blocks on the Lincoln guards who had been high scorers during the first half.

Storm continued to increase their lead throughout when the substitutes where utilised by the coach. Zoe hicks provided accurate and more adventurous passing to the inside (much to the coach’s delight) which led to more points on the board. Amber Moss came on for her first appearance for the team getting involved straight away and even managed to contribute to score by scoring 2 points. Leanne Rowe made a moderate impact on the score board but was a pivotal player by running hard all night, adding well needed communication to the team and stepping up when moved to the forward position.

Storm Ladies vs. Grimsby Gators u18 (Coach Ric Spencer)

Coming off back to back away games Storm ladies hoped to convert recent away success into a home win. The ladies had a steady start struggling to connect with the basket, however their strong defence meant the score remained close after the first 5 minutes where behind them. Using man-to-man defence proved hard work against a faster and stronger team of young men however the girls held on well working hard giving up nothing. After a first half using only the more experienced five and a first appearance for 6ft Carla Sass the team where still very much in the game. However the 2nd half was a struggle as the gators where able to make use of their deeper bench and athleticism.

Several fast break plays by the gators and turn overs the other end by storm led to a sizeable gap appearing in the score line. The coach used a timeout to change the defence to a zone along with an introduction of substitutes in the hope that this would change the flow of the game and stem the runaway fast breaks that the gators where enjoying. However the constant running that coach Ric Spence was orchestrating proved too much for the storm ladies to contend with. Even with a strong performance from Nathalie H. and Natalie D.  the score gap continued to grow. The coach exploited this opportunity for his less experienced players to face some strong adversity and play good minutes allowing them to play through.

First Game for the Storm Ladies

Storm Ladies 49 - RAF Waddington Ladies 55

After 3 weeks of training the Storm Ladies took on the experienced RAF Waddington who are in training for the national RAF basketball tournament. After a slow and rather nervous start the Storm settled in the second period and soon cut what was an 11 point deficit to within 2. Ali Southall and Becky Smith began to find shooting range and soon gave the Storm their very fist lead of the game. Becky Smith even managed to beat the half time buzzer with a deep 3-pointer.

The Storm's confidence was high and every player soon began to loosen up and enjoy the occasion as for many players this was their first competitive basketball match, but it didn't show. The storms defense was aggressive and disciplined which soon allowed for early transitional baskets. Leanne Rowe (captain) hit 2 three pointers in a row and soon the Storm we're crawling themselves back into the game. The Storm couldn't hold on for the victory but in many ways it was a victory none the less. A magnificent game against a very difficult opposition, a great performance from all!
